DEBATE AND QUIZ COMPETITIONS ORGANISED FOR MUSLIM GIRL CHILD IN
COMMEMORATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD HELD AT LAGOS

Keynote Address
The Administrative Officer of the LMO Foundation, Ismail Adebisi Adeyemo spoke about the Foundation extensively from inception till present, and explained that the rationale behind the establishment of the Foundation in 2018 was to promote the status and dignity of deprived or indigent Muslim girl child (boys inclusive) through organizing free tutorial classes, advocacy and mentoring programmes, grant/financial assistance et cetera. He briefed the participants about the Convener of the Foundation, Alhaja Lateefah Modupeola Okunnu, OFR, and its Board of Trustees (B.O.T.) comprising Mrs. Fausat Tinuola Feshitan (Chairperson), Hon. Justice Habeeb Adewale Abiru, Hon. Justice Lateefa Abisola Okunnu, Mrs. Monsurat AlliOluwafuyi, Mr. Olakunle Adeniyi Ajagbe (Secretary), and Dr. Ahmad Sa’eid.
While enlightening the participants on the significance of the International Day of the Girl Child as an annual and internationally recognized observance on October 11th that empowers girls and amplifies their voices, he compared it with its adult version, the International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on March 8th , and explained further that the former acknowledges the importance, power, and potential of adolescent girls by encouraging opening up of more opportunities for them. He added that that Day is designated to eliminate gender-based challenges that little girls face around the world, including child marriages, poor learning opportunities, violence, and discrimination.
As a part of our annual activities to commemorate the Day, the Chairperson of the Foundation directed that a quiz/debate competition be organised for the girls, in order to provide a sharper focus in terms of assessing their cognitive learning, help with concentration and retain knowledge and information, build confidence and also, to motivate them.
Participants
In attendance were 34 duly registered participants comprising the Foundation’s students (majorly girls) and the organisers, Mr. Abd. Lateef Williams and Mr. Ismail Adeyemo.
Quiz and Debate Competitions
The selection criteria for the quiz and debate competitions were transparent and fair that the organisers called for contestants among the participants evenly. The contestants were guided to choose three questions each from Section A of the quiz competition of Random General Knowledge consisting of twenty questions, out of which six were subsequently qualified for Section B of the debate competition whose topic was A Girl Child: A blessing or a curse?
The six qualified contestants were Dhulkifli Habiybah, Hanifah Animashaun, Ishaq Sadat, Abdullahi Khadijah, Adebayo Fausat and Dauda Munirat with the quiz competition scores; 30, 10, 18, 22, 27 and 28 respectively, whereas the maximum obtainable score was 30.

Presentation of Prizes
The organisers presented some prizes consisting of various motivational books and
stationeries to the overall winner, the runner-up and the third best overall as well as the
other initial contestants for the quiz competition accordingly.
Vote of Thanks
Mr. Abd. Lateef Williams while encouraging the participants to remain dedicated and focus
on their academics, as there is no elevator to success other than taking the stairs gradually,
he also thanked the Foundation for organising the educative programme for the benefit of
the girls.
